Coyote's Wilderness Lobby

Dog, Pony and Coyote
went to Capitol Hill
to lobby. Together,
Dog and Pony lobbied
for dog and pony shows.
In private, Dog lobbied
for more lenient policies
for pooping in public places,
and Pony lobbied for leg traps
to catch coyotes. Coyote
lobbied for more wilderness.
Dog wound up with a top job
in the BLM, and Pony headed up
the Department of the Interior.
Coyote brought up the rear,
glumly clanking his leg trap
down the capitol steps.

Hoovering for Dollars

"I'll never say never again,"
said Coyote as he watched
Pig run a Hoover through a
room of ten dollar bills.
He had said "never" in response
to the right answer on a quiz show.
Now, as Pig, who had responded
"always" to the same answer,
madly hoovered up thousands
of dollars, the host interrupted
with another answer and Pig
responded "never." "Right,"
said the host. Coyote reconsidered
his options as Pig Hoovered out
another room, this one
full of twenty dollar bills.

You See Funny Things

Fox and Crow blew bubbles
through their little plastic
bubble hoops. Fox blew a
huge bubble that drifted over
and settled around Crow's head
so it looked like he was wearing
a space helmet. Inside that bubble,
Crow blew a bubble that looked
like a small world in the swirling
universe of the bigger bubble.
Coming upon this scene, Coyote
sat down to write this haiku:
You see funny things
when you haven't got a gun:
these bored trust-funders.

School for Singing Mammals

Coyote put out his shingle:
SCHOOL FOR SINGING MAMMALS.
His first students were Elvis
and whale. Elvis and Coyote
were friends outside of class
and drank together. Secretly,
Coyote liked Whale's singing
better, but his only praise
was for Elvis's stirring rendition
of Viva Los Vegas. That's
why there are lots of Coyotes,
there aren't many whales, and
Elvis will always be popular.
