TALKING SWEET BYE AND BYE
© Greg Keeler 1987
Old Friends and Lovers
Old friends and lovers seem to just drift through it all.
They never rise. They never fall.
Old friends and lovers never seem to write or call.
They live their lives. Their worlds get small.
What the saw dancing in their dreams
When they were God knows how much younger,
It don't seem the same when they think about it now.
When you've had all you can take,
You don't think about your hunger.
You remember songs you sang, but you can't remember how.
A man and a woman used to stay up every night.
They'd love and hate till it was light.
A man and a woman got jobs and settled down.
They sleep real sound. They never fight.
The fire in wind and rain,
It dies down in streams and rivers,
And streams and rivers end when they flow into the sea.
But the sea will never end,
Though it's never going nowhere,
Just like old friends and lovers,
Just like you and me.
Chorus
Yes, with her new micromodum, she'd seduce 'em and download 'em.
Her interface could print the chrome right off a trailer hitch.
But she said that I was sexist, a complete Oedipus Rexist.
In short, I was one lost son of a bitch.
Chorus
The other evening she wrote home through the modum on my phone.
She said her input output was on line.
Well, I was totally dismayed when she bragged about his K
And said his bit looked like a bite compared to mine.
