Luck-O-The-Irish - September 16, 2002
My friend Paul Sullivan from Chicago is not a fisherman but he may become one after this beginners luck story. Paul was attending a wedding in Gloucester and was staying in a Motor Inn located on the beach inside a small cove. He was looking out the window one morning and noticed eight fisherman hooking up on a constant basis and wandered down to see what was going on. The entire cove was black with four inch baitfish called Bunkers. They were so thick he could reach down into the water and grab them . Blues and Stripers were in a feeding frenzy on the Bunkers. They were gorging on them till they puked and the entire cove smelled like partially digested Bunkers. And fisherman were having the time of their life catching the Blues and Stripers.

A fellow named Jim Pearson from Ansonia CT was the only fellow fly-fisherman.  He'd been a fly-fishing guide guide for 22 years and said he'd only experienced this phenomenon 20 times in his career. Jim caught 44 Blues and 6 stripers  that day. He was also kind enough to loan Paul a spinning rod. Paul caught caught  3 Blues and a Striper. The next day the bait fish and feeding frenzy was gone and the bay was quiet. Paul says he's ready to try fly fishing now!    .........Gearman
